VOA's Persian News Network Wins Medal in NY Festivals Competition

Medal awarded for special program's design work

Washington, D.C., February 13, 2009 – The Voice of America's (VOA) Persian News Network (PNN) received a World Bronze Medal in the 2009 New York Festivals Television Programming and Promotions Awards competition for design work on a special program about the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

The award cited an hour-long PNN program at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., which featured four guests and a host discussing politics in advance of the Democratic National Convention. PNN also earned two Finalist Certificates for design work on Roundtable With You, a five-day a week call-in show that features news, interviews and personalities, and for Best Computer Animation Promotion Spot for network identification.

"We're delighted that PNN has received outside recognition for its work," said Steve Redisch, VOA's executive editor. "We're committed to giving our large audience in Iran high-quality news and information programming," he said.

U.S. and international broadcasters from 30 countries in five continents submitted entries to the 2009 New York Festivals Television Programming and Promotion Awards. The competition, now in its 52nd year, honors "The World's Best Work" in categories encompassing all aspects of television production. Industry peers judge all entries from many U.S. and international broadcasters.

VOA has the largest combined radio and television audience of all international broadcasters in Iran, with one in four adult Iranians tuning in to a VOA show at least once a week. Programs are also streamed on the website, www.VOAPNN.com. VOA broadcasts seven hours of television daily, repeated in a 24-hour format, and five hours of radio. Broadcasts are available round-the-clock on the Internet.

The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 134 million people. Programs are produced in 45 languages.
