Americans from all walks of life are sharing their compelling and personal stories on a new weekly VOA series called Voices of America.
The two-minute television and web features offer a unique perspective on life in the United States by letting people speak in their own words about the successes and challenges they face, and to reflect on the qualities, character and values that help make the country what it is today.
“People around the world are fascinated and curious about Americans,” says creator and executive producer Deborah Tate.
“This series focuses on Americans with compelling stories that speak to American values and America in a broader context," Tate says.
The series, which debuted July 2, just in time for the U.S. Independence Day holiday, profiles some of the newest Americans who had just taken the oath of citizenship.
Other individuals to share their stories on Voices of America include Greg Louganis, the Olympic gold medal diver who has been living with HIV for more than two decades; Vitenam veteran Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which marks its 30th anniversary this year; and Bruce Laingen, the charge d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran who was among the hostages seized at the compound in 1979 and held in Iran for 444 days.
The program will be translated for play on VOA language service programs and websites.
