VOA Border Crossings host Larry London has a treat in store for his worldwide audience—an exclusive interview with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Barry Manilow.

The 70-year-old pop icon talked to Larry as he rehearsed for the annual Independence Day concert and fireworks display on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall. It’s not the first time Manilow was chosen to sing at the capital city’s Fourth of July celebration. In 2009, he opened the event with Let Freedom Ring, a patriotic number that he closed the show with this year.

“It’s really great to sing a song that I’m so proud of,” said Manilow. “I’m honored that they asked me to come back and do it; it’s just overwhelming to be able to perform in front of the Capitol.”

Manilow plans to take a break from touring and work on a Broadway musical that he co-wrote, entitled Harmony, which opens in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 6th. “But you know, I don’t like to stay home,” he admitted. “I’ll probably be on the road again.”

In a nod to his fans around the world, the singer told Larry, “I hope I get to see the international audience soon. I have a great time when I go out of the country.”

Larry’s interview with Manilow will be featured on his Border Crossings program on July 26th.
