Middle East Voices is Finalist for Online Award

The Online News Association has named VOA’s Middle East Voices as a finalist in the 2012 Online Journalism Awards, which honor excellence in digital journalism.

Middle East Voices was designed as a collaborative online platform, combining investigative journalism, crowdsourcing and social media technology to report on events and trends in the Middle East.

“Middle East Voices has sought to tell the stories of the Arab Spring not simply through our own individual voices, but collaboratively, via those who are on the ground living the events,” says web reporter Cecily Hilleary. “Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and Storify, these are simply means for us to mine those voices in what is a very collaborative endeavor,” she says.

The website was nominated in the “Topical Reporting, Large” category. The other three finalists in the category were CNN, The New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. Winners will be announced September 22nd in San Francisco at the Online Journalism Awards Banquet.

The finalists were selected by a group of 34 industry-leading journalists and digital media professionals. Later this month, a panel of 12 judges will meet to select winners at the University of Miami under the auspices of the School of Communication in Coral Gables, Florida.
