VOA correspondent Suzanne Presto interviews former U.S. Senator John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, after the ceremony to welcome the space shuttle Discovery to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.

The former NASA astronaut told Presto the U.S. mission into space had changed dramatically from his first experience on the Friendship 7 spacecraft in 1962 and his last venture into space on Discovery in 1998.

Glenn said the crew had 83 different research projects on the Discovery flight, “and those are things that benefit the people right here on Earth, and that's where I see the value of the space program."
