Scott Stearns started his reporting journey in Africa during the Liberian civil war as a stringer for the BBC and the Associated Press. Over the years he has worked for VOA in various positions on the continent and Washington, initially as a stringer in Lagos, and later as a Washington radio reporter, Nairobi Bureau Chief, White House Correspondent, Dakar Bureau Chief, and State Department Correspondent. He returned to the Africa Division in 2016 as Managing Editor. Stearns won the Cowan Award for Humanitarian Reporting on the famine in Sudan. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science both in journalism from Northwestern University.
