Statement by VOA Director Amanda Bennett on the Death of NPR Journalists

Voice of America Director Amanda Bennett on Monday offered VOA’s condolences on the deaths of NPR photojournalist David Gilkey and his journalist colleague, Afghan interpreter and photographer Zabihullah Tamanna. They were on assignment traveling with an Afghan army unit when a rocket-propelled grenade hit their armored Humvee. The two journalists and their Afghan army driver were killed.

“It is a very sad day when a journalist is killed in action. The untimely and tragic deaths of NPR photojournalist David Gilkey and his Afghan interpreter Zabihullah Tamanna remind us of the dangerous environments some of our colleagues have to endure, at times paying the ultimate price, just to do their job. We send our heartfelt sympathy to the families and colleagues of these two courageous men.”
