Macedonia Name Change Referendum

Media Advisory

October 1, 2018

A referendum was held in the Republic of Macedonia on September 30, 2018. Voters were asked whether they support membership in the European Union and NATO by accepting the agreement struck between the Republic of Macedonia and Greece in June 2018 to change the name of the country to the “Republic of North Macedonia”.

While the polls have closed, the results are considered consultative with questions remaining about next steps.

The VOA Macedonian language service has provided extensive coverage surrounding the referendum vote, including interviews with leaders on both sides of the issue.
