In partnership with the Anita Borg Institute, the Voice of America hosted a town hall discussion on women and technology, during the widely attended Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference in Orlando, Florida, on October 5. Grace Hopper, a rear admiral during World War II, created software still in use by businesses today.

VOA’s town hall discussion, titled “Break Through,” included two segments. In the first segment, panelists shared their personal knowledge about the barriers women face gaining access to the internet due to restrictive social and cultural norms in several countries.

The second panel featured Danielle Brown, chief diversity and inclusion officer at Google, and Paula Tolliver, chief information officer at Intel, who tackled the hurdles women experience competing for IT jobs and executive positions.

The discussions were streamed live on Voice of America’s Facebook and YouTube pages, during which audience members were able to ask questions using the hashtag #WomeninTech.

More on the panel and conference, including a video report, can be found here.
