Voice of America’s Eastern Europe Chief Myroslava Gongadze will be awarded the 2023 Inamori Ethics Prize by the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University, the Center announced today.

The Inamori Ethics Prize seeks to “honor outstanding international ethical leaders whose actions and influence have greatly improved the condition of humankind.”

“I feel humbled by this honor,” said Gongadze. “I have seen so much in my career as a journalist, but it always brings me great joy to know that my native Ukraine has access to such trustworthy news and information through the Voice of America, a media organization that manifests daily the importance of a free press.”

A lawyer by training and now veteran broadcaster and award-winning journalist, Myroslava Gongadze began working with VOA’s Ukrainian service in 2004 and later became the chief of the service from 2015-2022 before accepting her current role as the Eastern Europe Chief. She was a 2019 Neiman Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where she studied disinformation, and prior to that a Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow at George Washington University. Her career has been marked by regular interviews with top U.S. and Ukrainian government officials, and she was also a moderator of Ukraine’s first nationally televised post-Maidan election debates in 2014. Gongadze’s writings have been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the Journal of Democracy and numerous Ukrainian publications.

“Congratulations to Myroslava for being awarded the Inamori Ethics Prize,” said Acting VOA Director Yolanda López. “I’m so pleased to see her many years of work to offer our audiences in Ukraine unfettered access to news and information being acknowledged.”

Gongadze will be recognized officially by the Inamori International Center in the Fall when she will deliver a free lecture to the public and participate in an academic conference and panel discussion on September 21 and 22.
