Voice of America Hosting Global Immigration Debate

Voice of America is inviting its worldwide audience to join the growing U.S. immigration debate by taking part in a dynamic online conversation about an issue facing an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.

The multimedia project, Immigration: The New Face of America, combines the launch of a special interactive webpage and a television series that looks at the lives of immigrants, legal challenges, political and security issues, and the pressures that drive people to come to America.

“These immigrant profiles, which are being broadcast on our satellite streams around the world in many of our 45 languages, form the basis for a wider debate that we are encouraging and hosting online,” said VOA Director David Ensor.

“Visitors to our website will find a wealth of information about immigration that helps explain it in human terms. It provides a way for our audience to ask questions and share ideas and personal stories,” Ensor said.

In addition to helpful resources, info-graphics and statistics on foreign born populations and deportation cases, online visitors can view the TV series, take a sample U.S. citizenship test and share comments or photographs.

On Tuesday, June 25th, VOA will host a special immigration edition of Talk2US, an interactive Learning English forum that lets callers discuss issues and ask questions on Skype. VOA journalists Kate Woodsome and Avi Arditti will host the program, which will be streamed live and available on-demand.

VOA’s TV special looks at the current political divide on immigration reform and includes a profile of journalist and activist, Jose Antonio Vargas, whose essay in the New York Times two years ago put him at the center of the immigration debate. Other segments include a rancher living on the U.S.-Mexican border, a Vietnamese filmmaker, and two young Palestinian-American girls whose mother was deported. All six profiles can be watched online.
