Zayne Patel - Public Relations Intern

Voice of America is a source of information and education for millions of people around the world. Likewise my internship experience at this prestigious institution has been thoroughly rewarding. As an intern I operated as a sort of “jack-of-all-trades” type figure. Be that in crafting press releases on exciting new projects undertaken by BBG’s many offices, or in researching the various services of VOA and how they fit into our mission of bringing a free stream of information to the far reaches of the world.

This work was not only rewarding in of itself, but also a great educational experience for any young intern. One such project had me assemble an extensive file cataloging experts in various scholarly fields. I was able to succinctly file away economists from think tanks like the Council on Foreign Relations, as well as top academics from distinguished local universities such as Georgetown. This vast compendium of information will serve as the basis by which VOA can take advantage of various prestigious intuitions of learning.

The modern workplace is highly dependent on collaboration oriented projects – the skills I have learned while working for the Public Relations team have been instrumental in making me a more effective employee. I have learned so much from my co-workers on the PR staff Bridget, Michelle, Anna, George, and Kevin. Each one took a particular interest in helping make this internship worthwhile for myself and my fellow interns Yassi and Hayley.

It is hard to explicate the value of an internship, but any job you can come into that leaves you a more diligent and educated worker and citizen is more than worth it.
