Gary Butterworth is one of the rare Americans who grew up listening to Voice of America. His interest in VOA lead him to an internship with the agency that evolved into a career that has brought him assignments in eight countries and with six VOA language services. A TV news producer at heart and by background, Butterworth transitioned into management to launch VOA's refugee program in 2019. This initiative ensures that forcibly displaced communities are able to access VOA content and that stories of displacement reach global audiences. He is currently serving as VOA's Acting Chief of Staff, where his unique understanding of VOA operations, international broadcast technology, and TV production is being leveraged to support VOA's senior leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations from Syracuse University.
